Wayne Rooney's stunning overhead kick in the Manchester derby against Manchester City has been voted as the Premier League's best ever goal by supporters.

The Manchester United striker produced a special effort to win an important league match in February 2011 over their local rivals which has been selected by several hundreds of thousands of fans around the globe as being the best strike ever witnessed in the 20 seasons of the Barclays Premier League.

Englishman Rooney's goal took 26% of the final votes. He said of the award: "I grew up watching the Premier League so to be voted the best goal in the history of the Premier League is a great feeling. There's so many good goals in that shortlist, goals that I watched in my living room as a kid: Alan Shearer's goal, Paolo Di Canio's, Tony Yeboah's, David Beckham's. To be competing with them and winning is a great honour for me and something I'm very proud of. I'd like to say a big thank you to all the fans that voted for me."

Ex-Manchester United player David Beckham scooped the award for best goal from the first decade of Premier League seasons with his audacious chip from inside the halfway line against Wimbledon in 1999.

Dennis Bergkamp's goal for Arsenal against Newcastle United at St James Park came second with his deft flick, turn and finish receiving 19% of the votes while fellow former Gunner Thierry Henry's stupendous flick and volley from thirty yards at Highbury in 2000 finished 3rd in the poll standings with 15% of fans voting.
